Maldon is a charming little town, situated in central Victoria. Historically, Maldon is important because it was established during the mid-19th century gold rushes that were such an important chapter in Victoria's development. However, that does not explain Maldon's significance today, because Maldon was just one of many small towns in Victoria where gold was mined. What makes Maldon much more important is the fact that the town remains, to a large extent, the way it was at the end of the 19th century. When gold-mining ceased in Maldon in the 1920's there was very little else to sustain the town in a commercial sense. There was little employment available, and many people moved away. The population shrunk to less that 400 people. Because of this, in an architectural sense, the town entered a state of preservation - since old buildings were not being demolished, and new buildings were not being constructed. There were some exceptions to this, with the demolition of the Bank of Victoria building to make way for a petrol station being the most lamentable example. In 1966, the National Trust classified Maldon as a "Notable Town". Maldon was actually the first town to receive that classification.
